[00:00:00] This podcast is sponsored by Riverside. Riverside is my favorite place to record remote interviews,

[00:00:05] I can record high quality audio and high quality video, and shout out to the Riverside team.

[00:00:10] They just upped their game with their AI transcription, and I'm definitely noticing

[00:00:14] a lot more accuracy with my transcripts. So stoked about that. And I've been using

[00:00:20] their Magic Clips more and more. And Magic Clips is an AI tool that will take your

[00:00:24] video that you recorded and break it up into small shorts for social media. It's badass.

[00:00:30] And if you're not using Riverside, I think you could get a lot of value from it. And

[00:00:34] as a first-time listener, enter promo code CLIPPED to the name of this show, and you'll

[00:00:37] get 20% off any individual plan. What up, potty people? And welcome back to Clipped.

[00:00:53] As always, I'm Eric, your host, and Clip brings you the tips, resources, and people

[00:00:58] to help you crush your online content goals. And hey, I am sick. Sick as shit. My daughter

[00:01:05] started school and mommy and me and a couple other programs. And so she brought it home

[00:01:10] and you can probably hear my voice super nasally, super congested. So rather than

[00:01:14] power through this new episode that I wanted to record, I figured I would put that on the

[00:01:19] back burner and re-air this episode about podcasting on YouTube. I'm talking about why

[00:01:24] you need to be on YouTube, but also if you're going to upload your podcast to YouTube,

[00:01:28] there's a certain process that you need to follow so that YouTube recognizes your podcast as a

[00:01:34] podcast and not just like another video. So I cover that in this episode and also share

[00:01:39] like the benefits of being on YouTube. So yeah, I think you're going to love it.

[00:01:44] I think if you're not on YouTube, this is going to motivate you to get on YouTube. And

[00:01:47] obviously you're going to want to do video. But if that's not in the cards right now,

[00:01:52] you got to at least upload a static image, maybe like your show's cover art or specific

[00:01:58] like piece of artwork for each episode and then just embed the audio file into that. So then

[00:02:04] at least you're on YouTube. That's going to help for discoverability. That's going to help

[00:02:09] coming up in Google more often for search terms related to that year episodes. And so

[00:02:14] I'm going to get into that in this episode and hey, I will see you next week. Enjoy.

[00:02:23] Podcasting on YouTube. And there's various different viewpoints, although I think we're

[00:02:27] kind of getting to a collective viewpoint that you need to be on YouTube and you probably

[00:02:32] need to have video and I know all you audio people are like, shit, I don't have video.

[00:02:37] I hate video. It's hard. But I'm going to be talking about those things and more in

[00:02:42] this episode. But before that, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for listening.

[00:02:46] Thank you for the support that YouTube channel is growing and it's timely that this

[00:02:49] episode is about YouTube. So stick with me. I'm going to be talking about why YouTube is a

[00:02:54] world of opportunity for podcasters and I'm going to guide you through the process of

[00:02:58] properly uploading your video podcast on YouTube so that it can show up within

[00:03:03] YouTube music, which is the platform that YouTube is really pushing for podcasting.

[00:03:09] Honestly, I'm a huge fan of audio only podcasts or just listening to the audio

[00:03:13] version of podcasts. Listen to several a week. I grew up, cut my teeth as an audio

[00:03:19] engineer, so I really do respect the art of audio and I love how I can listen to it

[00:03:24] when I'm driving or on a hike or doing whatever I'm doing and I don't have to

[00:03:28] be 100% focused on a screen because for me and probably for you, you're trying

[00:03:33] to get off screens or at least like lower your screen time. And so I don't

[00:03:37] have any plans and I don't think anyone should have any plans or does

[00:03:40] have plans to stop killing it and crushing it with the audio version of their

[00:03:45] show. But when it comes to YouTube specifically, and that's what this episode

[00:03:49] is about, if you have an audio only podcast, you're at a disadvantage.

[00:03:53] The new like momentum and features that YouTube's rolling out, it's not

[00:03:58] really accommodating for audio. And if you're in a stage where like

[00:04:01] shooting video sucks or you don't have the equipment or you're intimidated

[00:04:05] and you hate editing it, you still can upload your audio episodes to

[00:04:09] YouTube with like a static image, a thumbnail, maybe the waveform just

[00:04:13] plays or maybe the audio is just embedded into the image. You could do

[00:04:18] that as a placeholder. I personally think it's a little lame, but it is

[00:04:23] better than nothing. So let's just set the table straight with that audio

[00:04:27] you can upload to YouTube and having like some kind of presence is

[00:04:30] better than none at all, but you're really going to be missing out if

[00:04:34] you don't start creating a video podcast and don't start uploading it

[00:04:38] to YouTube. You need to be the face of your brand, you'd be out there,

[00:04:41] you need to be making personal and emotional connections and your

[00:04:44] appearance is a big part of that. And we're just going to continue to

[00:04:47] see more and more of it. So don't get left out, get on the train now

[00:04:51] and start taking advantage. So in a couple years from now, you're

[00:04:54] going to be like, well shit, I started doing video on YouTube and

[00:04:58] it wasn't great at first and I was intimidated, but you know, 30, 40

[00:05:02] episodes later, I've kind of got my feet wet and I'm a little bit

[00:05:06] on a roll and I know how to talk to the camera and body language

[00:05:09] and I'm comfortable. And I just think you're going to be in a far

[00:05:12] better place with your brand, with your growth than if you continue

[00:05:17] to just do audio only. And I hate saying that because I love

[00:05:22] audio it's so much easier. Like I had to set up this shot and

[00:05:25] my video game is still a little weak but I'm working on it

[00:05:28] it's getting better. I feel you I've been there and I

[00:05:31] think a lot of other people have as well. Okay, but in any

[00:05:38] case, let's look at some data here. It's taken from 2022 and so

[00:05:42] keep that in mind as I tell you these statistics. I'm going to

[00:05:45] report per this study that there's over 2 billion logged in

[00:05:50] YouTube users. Far more than podcasting will podcasting you

[00:05:55] don't log into anything but 2 billion people logged in per this

[00:05:59] Edison study. 56% of surveyed participants identified as new

[00:06:04] podcast listeners frequently coming to YouTube for podcasts

[00:06:08] and making YouTube their most frequently used platform for new

[00:06:13] podcast listens. Additionally, 43% of weekly podcast listeners in

[00:06:18] the US say YouTube is one of the services they use when

[00:06:21] listening to podcasts. Again, this is from this Edison study

[00:06:25] from 2022. So keep that in mind. And I don't know the

[00:06:29] size of the data pool but per this Edison study all I'm

[00:06:32] saying is that those are big numbers 43%. I mean, I do watch

[00:06:39] stuff on YouTube and listen to like clips or not even like

[00:06:42] short clips but maybe like seven to 15 to 20 minutes of like an

[00:06:45] hour long show on YouTube sometimes but traditionally

[00:06:49] I'm listening to audio. Those seem big though I have a friend

[00:06:54] that I know for sure listens largely on YouTube so I'll take

[00:06:57] him into my personal data pool but as far as I know

[00:07:01] most people seem like they listen on audio 43% seems high.

[00:07:05] All that to say is that if you're not on YouTube, you could

[00:07:08] be missing out on a massive like piece of your audience that

[00:07:11] is like yet to discover you. So we've established that you

[00:07:14] should probably be on YouTube and now I'm going to tell you

[00:07:17] how to upload your podcast to YouTube in the proper way

[00:07:22] because there's a couple steps here and if you follow

[00:07:24] them your show will actually be like designated a podcast

[00:07:28] by YouTube rather than just like uploading the video willy-nilly.

[00:07:32] So you're going to go to your YouTube account, you're going

[00:07:34] to go to the studio and you're going to click on new podcast.

[00:07:37] You're going to enter your podcast details including the

[00:07:40] title description and you're going to upload your thumbnail

[00:07:44] and how this works is that YouTube now has podcast

[00:07:47] playlist and so to properly upload your show you're

[00:07:50] going to create a playlist and you're going to select

[00:07:53] that as your podcast and then you're going to upload

[00:07:56] your show, you're going to upload your art and then

[00:07:58] you're actually going to see a podcast tab on like your

[00:08:02] YouTube homepage which is awesome. You're going to

[00:08:05] upload your videos there and then you're going to be

[00:08:08] like in YouTube's podcast system rather if you don't

[00:08:11] do this they're just going to show up as videos but

[00:08:15] if you make sure you follow these steps and

[00:08:17] actually designate a playlist as your podcast

[00:08:20] you're going to get to take advantage of YouTube

[00:08:22] music. YouTube music is different from just YouTube.com.

[00:08:28] The URL is actually music.youtube.com and it's an

[00:08:31] entirely different ecosystem. That's where you can

[00:08:34] listen to music from all your favorite artists but

[00:08:36] within that they actually have a podcast tab.

[00:08:40] When you click on that type in the name of your show

[00:08:42] if you followed these steps your podcast should

[00:08:45] come up and I got to admit I kind of like the

[00:08:48] user experience on YouTube music. I like the

[00:08:50] layout and just to note this is an app but there's

[00:08:54] also a desktop version available. But for your

[00:08:57] podcast again to show up within YouTube music you'll

[00:09:01] need to properly set up that podcast playlist that

[00:09:04] I mentioned. Within that what's dope is there is

[00:09:07] an option within YouTube music to listen to the

[00:09:09] audio version of the podcast. So while I'm I

[00:09:12] don't recommend only having audio at this

[00:09:14] point and I've changed my stance on this

[00:09:16] throughout the last couple years you can

[00:09:19] still get discovered in the YouTube music app and

[00:09:21] there is a tab for audio for you. So keep that

[00:09:24] in mind not a fan of less like the static image

[00:09:27] but you guys can take advantage of some of these

[00:09:30] features. But here's where I think this is

[00:09:33] game changing is the podcast explore page

[00:09:38] and so you're going to get recommended videos

[00:09:41] and podcasts to watch based on your viewing

[00:09:45] history and so this is where I think

[00:09:47] discoverability is going to be huge that the

[00:09:49] other listening platforms don't have is this

[00:09:52] feature that someone else is listening to a

[00:09:56] podcast like mine a podcast about podcasting that

[00:09:59] teaches podcasting and then hey maybe an

[00:10:03] episode of mine will come into their feeder

[00:10:05] or maybe you have a fitness podcast and

[00:10:07] people are listening to like something with

[00:10:10] David Goggins and then your podcast might get

[00:10:14] you know pushed to that person because

[00:10:16] you're also like in the fitness world I

[00:10:19] think that's rad we've never really seen

[00:10:21] that before yes on you regular YouTube

[00:10:23] you get recommended videos and so this is

[00:10:26] kind of like that except it's for podcasting

[00:10:28] and I think that that's huge moving forward

[00:10:31] people are always talking about discoverability

[00:10:32] it's tough with podcasting this and that

[00:10:34] well maybe this will solve that we'll

[00:10:36] have to see and so it's just another

[00:10:37] thing that's going to help you get in

[00:10:40] front of more eyeballs and if you have a

[00:10:43] video podcast you can start to take advantage

[00:10:45] of this I'm just filming on my iPhone so

[00:10:47] with a ring light so there's that make

[00:10:49] sure your background is good make sure

[00:10:51] lighting is decent you don't have to

[00:10:53] invest a lot of money you can use a tool

[00:10:55] like Riverside but you got to start

[00:10:57] doing it and my stance is now firm on

[00:11:00] that I've kind of changed my tune over

[00:11:02] the years it's it used to be kind of

[00:11:03] like a nice to have but I think

[00:11:04] moving forward in the next five years

[00:11:07] if you're planning on sticking around

[00:11:09] for that long it's going to be a

[00:11:11] necessity you have to be willing for it

[00:11:14] to not be that good in the beginning

[00:11:16] I'll go look at my video podcast from

[00:11:19] when I first started and I'm even

[00:11:21] embarrassed of some stuff like a month

[00:11:23] ago but you got to just keep cranking

[00:11:25] along you got to be okay with quote

[00:11:27] unquote sucking at the beginning and

[00:11:30] to be honest I didn't start adding

[00:11:32] video probably until like 20 episodes

[00:11:34] in and then I was like alright I

[00:11:36] got to start doing this this is

[00:11:37] episode 72 so I do have a lot of

[00:11:40] videos now out there and you just

[00:11:41] keep getting better you keep getting

[00:11:43] more comfortable that's it for me

[00:11:45] guys I'm gonna get out of here I want

[00:11:46] to thank you for listening and if

[00:11:48] you're really feeling the content

[00:11:49] and you're looking for advice on

[00:11:52] podcasting or tips and tutorials

[00:11:56] com that's the ecosystem that this

[00:11:58] show clip falls into and on the
